Student Anna Štepánková took the idea of a wooden chair further and came up with a very intriguing design. Tamashii chair is not just an original looking piece of furniture, but also a tribute to environmental responsibility. Here is a statement from the designer: “The inspiration for a dining chair Tamashii comes from a Japanese veneer technique called Bunaco. My goal was to discover all possibilities this technique offers and apply gained knowledge in an innovative way. In my work, I put an emphasis on a handmade experimenting with a wooden material. My aim was to design a chair which would be connecting use of a traditional technique in a modern design and I wished to point out a sense of this combination. The Tamashii chair, besides other things, is a part of a concept – Buy a chair, get a tree – which is my manifestation of responsibility towards environment and a life cycle of the product”. No matter what the standpoint, the chair found on Design Milk looks dynamic, yet comfortable. How do you find it?

DOS Architects have completed an intriguing renovation of the top two floors of Westbourne Grove Church, a Baptist chapel initially built in 1853. Situated in London’s Notting Hill, the interiors of the new apartment seem to defy their surroundings, showcasing a highly contemporary design. A double height space acts as the core of the loft; the church’s original arched windows were kept intact and flood this interior in natural light. Pink and purple were employed to add color to the place, dynamically contrasting the white walls. The home has a total living area of 400 square meters and a layout which ensures a high level of transparency. The two floors are connected through an interesting looking glass stairway. Combining a daring design with state of the art technology and modern finishes, it is difficult to believe this futuristic apartment is integrated in an old traditional church. We are curious to know your honest opinion regarded to the overall design of this apartment in relationship to its surrounding architecture- find this approach advisable?

The collaboration between theInstitue forAdvanced Architecture of Catalonia (IAAC) and leading multinational company in the Spanish electricity sector Endesa resulted in the construction of an innovative solar structure that will adorn the Barcelona’s Marina Pier for one year. Part of the Smart City Expo, the Endesa Pavilion (also known as Solar House 2.0 ) is describes as ” a testbed for informational grid technologies“. Combining prefabricated technologies with perfectly adapted customization, this genius design built in just one month is software-designed, cut to dimensions and assembled into a place-specific design. Plywood wedges shape outside solar system supports and interior storage spaces, while their cantilevering features shade the interiors from gaining too much heat in the summer.Summarizing the project, IAAC explains the modularity, versatility and functional features of the pavilion: “The project is an exercise in which a building, under the guidance of the block type of Barcelona, is adapted by adding a series of modules on its facade. These modules, which are seen as triangular pieces section, make possible for the building to optimize energy and spatial intelligence. Its size and components vary depending on the orientation and inclination of the sun, the relationship with the environment and other technical needs.” Scroll down to see two videos – one presenting the pavilion from multiple angles and the second one explaining the ideas and technologies behind the exceptional project…

The terms ‘contemporary’ and ‘modern’ are often used interchangeably when describing design. It’s a common faux pas and one of which this writer is certainly guilty. In design lexicon the two words have contrasting and quite distinct meanings. Describing their difference at a somewhat rudimentary level: contemporary makes reference to the present-day – that which is current and of the time – whereas modern alludes to the past, specifically that of Modernism (post the First World War) and mid-20th century modern design and architecture.

This restaurant’s name describes its interesting space arrangement – a double floor space hollow in the middle. The Hollow Restaurant was designed by Sergei Makhno and Vasiliy Butenko – a powerful duo that managed to transform an empty space into a fascinating dining space. Found on Cubeme, the restaurant features two floors that combine excellent service and a calming, interesting interior design. The natural colors used in creating this dining space were carefully considered to add character to the space and the textures give guests a relaxing feel, but keeps them interested in the beautiful details. The first floor of the Hollow Restaurant is occupied by the dining area, where flowers hover over the tables, while the second floor shelters a more secluded space – a lounge space that displays the same beautiful flower motif. Lamps from Vasiliy Butenko light up the space and create a special atmosphere that accompanies great meals. Wood was considered the best material that can express the designer’s intentions – a warm, inviting space that brings the focus back on the connection between creative design and natural inspiration…

As we alluded to earlier, green and white is a smart combination that works well in a modern bedroom and balances energetic overtones with a serene backdrop. The amount of green you use here depends on the size of the room and the amount of natural light that floods into your bedroom. Smaller bedrooms with too much green might seem both overwhelming and visually cluttered.

If you believe that green does not work in a trendy and minimal contemporary bedroom, then think again! A green accent wall is easy to shape and it brings that much needed warmth to an otherwise cool and mundane interior. Just repeat the color in the room using vivacious bedding, accessories, nightstands or even a couple of lovely vases and you have an inviting bedroom that is both energetic and relaxing. Those who feel that an accent wall in green or décor are not your thing can still add the color by placing a couple of potted plants to fill up those empty corners. It is an easy, eco-friendly and healthy choice to turn to that will instantly alter the mood in the bedroom.

Blok Wschodni /Eastern Block is a collection of paper cut-out models representing various modernist buildings in Warsaw, Poland. The series has been created by Hispano-Polish graphic design studio Zupagrafika and is made up of iconic examples of functional architecture in the Polish capital (Rotunda PKO), some less classic buildings, however, familiar to the city dwellers (Za Zelazna Brama district, Smolna 8 street, Mokotow), as well as “Wielka Plyta” prefab blocks from the outskirts (Tarchomin and Pulawska districts).
The series is eco-friendly as it is made from 100% recycled paper and cardboard. The buildings illustrating paper objects are all hand-drawn. Every item includes a short technical note informing about the architects, year of construction and exact location. The main idea behind the collection is an attempt at understanding the city from its outskirts towards the centre and viewing it from a reverse perspective, as well as emphasizing the equally significant role both the anonymous and very recognizable architecture has got in shaping the city`s identity. The complete collection is edited and distributed by Zupagrafika and can be ordered online from their site or purchased in bookshops and concept stores around Poland.
