We received an amazing project – a Singapore shoebox flat makeover that transformed a 550 square feet one-bedroom apartment into a splendidly modern residence. The owner – a successful woman living with her mother – needed an updated place to enjoy her life, so she turned to KNQ Associates for a complete remodel of her flat. Chief designer Stanley Tham opted for a “chic and functional semi-bachelorette pad” mirroring the owner’s personality. By adding and re-configuring spaces, the architects created a customized space, where mirrored walls bounce light into the apartment and a new dining area proves of immense help for enjoying dinner with family and friends. The white kitchen was designed to maximize storage, while the blue backsplash keeps a colorful, vivid atmosphere. Be sure you check out the before photos below to see the fascinating transformation. Here is how the architects describe their project: “A self-made lady should have a beautiful and hardworking home too. It is with that belief that we made sure each piece of customized furniture serves more than one function. A lengthy white, wall-mounted storage unit conceals messy cables and multitasks as a whimsical light source apart from its intended use in the hall. Joining up to this unit is a shoe bench which doubles up as additional seating for guests while holding shoes down below. This multipurpose idea extends into the bedroom which the owner shares with her mum, where a partition that comes in the form of a wardrobe divides the tiny room in such a way as to offer each person her own personal space. The utility room, located right at the back of the kitchen, has been turned into a private play-and-work room for the owner. A centerpiece wood lounge deck (for watching TV and as an extra bed for guests to sleep over) and plenty of book storage and light contribute to an inspirational space in which one can truly indulge.”

Stelle Architects have completed another project in the town of Bridgehampton, NY. Surfside. The private residence rests steps away from the shore, in an exposed Atlantic-Ocean environment. and is well integrated in its landscape. The architects describe the project as a “simple rectangular pavilion clinging to the dunes where water meets land. The volume is opened up to the waterside with large expanses of glass contrasting with a more solid but punctured façade to the street side. The house is secured against the power of the ocean with a steel frame work. Materials were chosen for their strength and durability against the salt water environment. Natural ventilation maximizes the ocean breezes, limiting mechanical cooling. Photovoltaic cells, hot water panels and geothermal heat pumps capture natural energy, reducing energy demand“. The residence consists of a main unit, guest annexe, garage for two cars and a swimming pool. Interiors are elegant. the simple finishes requiring little maintenance. Have a look!

Olson Kundig Architects have completed a steel-clad cabin in Olympic Peninsula, Washington, USA. Entitled Sol Duc Cabin, this unusual looking shelter has a total area of 350 square feet and is surrounded by wilderness. Here is more from the architects regarding the materials used to build the project: “Constructed primarily of unfinished, mild steel and structural insulated panels (SIPs), the cabin is supported by four steel columns and sits lightly on the site. Most of the structure—the steel frame and panels, the roof, shutters, and stairs—was prefabricated off-site, thereby reducing on-site waste and site disruption. Prefabrication kept typical construction wastage to a minimum. With a cantilevered roof that provides solar shading and protection from the elements. Each of the building’s shutters can be opened and closed with hand wheels that move the shutters over the glazed portions of each façade. The shutters are operated by a series of mechanical devices including a hand wheel, drive shafts, u-joints, spur gears and cables”. The fishing cabin accommodates dining and kitchen areas on the first floor and bedrooms above. A cantilevered deck extending from the lower level ensures great views of the river…

Emanating charisma and elegance, the new kitchen was specifically designed to meet certain criteria: functionality, clean aesthetics and  technical performance. Bavuso wanted to design a kitchen that embraces minimalist design without compromising on personality or charm. He says: “I like to think I succeed in satisfying everyone who loves rationality and functionality without having to give up the heart of things. ”There is an interesting use of materials in this kitchen, which give it a very tactile appeal. There are also some very interesting elements such as the flex wall cabinets, which have doors that slide up and fold out of the way, or the rear tidy system that reveals itself from below the counter top at the touch of a button. How do you like this kitchen? We think it’s pretty sleek!

Located in one of Athens’ suburb – Kifisia – and borrowing its name, the Residence in Kifisia occupies 350 square meters and was designed to suit the lifestyle of a family with four members. Due to the small, almost square shape of the plot, architects of N. Koukourakis & Associates created a sense of privacy and comfort by adding open air spaces. The ground floor spaces – foyer, sitting room, rest room, dining room, kitchen – were flooded with natural light, while the upstairs was separated into living, working and resting spaces for the kids. The second floor was reserved for the master bedroom, gathering views of the surroundings and featuring a vast veranda. Guest quarters and service rooms were designed to occupy the basement level. Adorned on the outside with coffee-grey coating and wood, this modern residence is strongly connected to the outdoors through extensive use of glass, but feels private and comfortable at the same time. You might like to compare it with another work by the same architects presented a while ago – see which one you like best…

Fitzroy House, completed in 2011 by Techne Architects is a spectacular harmonious dream home integrating artworks and other personal items with sentimental value into a design that exudes boldness and character. The owners, a young family from Fitzroy, Australia, were looking to refresh some aspects of their life, so they started with remodelling and enhancing their house. Placed at the intersection of old and new, the venue comprises areas for for living, social interaction and working.
“Built behind the heritage façade of a landmark property in Melbourne’s Fitzroy, this project retains and restores the original frontage while adding a rear addition with three levels of new living space. Conceptually, the design deals with the intersection of the old and the new through differing modes of visual connection and threshold.”  Three levels of new living spaces were added. Regular windows were replaced with glass panels to allow more sun and warmth inside the house. Playfulness, vitality and colours started contaminating the entire house. Many layers of the house were engulfed by the modern add-ons. New fabrics and textures enhance coziness throughout the house…

Painting the ceiling in green can be a fun alternative and by leaving the walls white, you will still have a neutral and versatile backdrop that will beautifully showcase wall art and sculptural décor additions. And for those who really want a personalized solution, mixing different shades to come with your own custom green hue is indeed an exciting and enjoyable alternative. This will assure that you are proud owner of a one-of-a-kind bedroom with a shade of green that you came up with.

Once in a while, we love to find something “worthy” enough to catch an architect’s attention if offered to him or her as a gift. Canadian artist Steve McDonald created Fantastic Cities, an eye-catching coloring book filled with intricate illustrations. The project has a distinctive large square-format and features 60 cities from around the world, including Paris, Tokyo, London, Istanbul, Guadalajara, New York and many more. We think of this book as one of those rare things that you come across and pause for a moment: it is captivating, provocative and possibly addictive for anyone who happens to take a sneak peek inside.
The unconventional relaxation tool for architects is currently available for purchase on Amazon, at a cost of £9.93. “This coloring book features immersive aerial views of real cities from around the world alongside gorgeously illustrated, Inception-like architectural mandalas. The project offers absorbingly complex vistas to color—nearly 60—including a selection of mind-bending labyrinthine architectural illustrations for still deeper meditative coloring adventures and imaginative flights of fancy”, explained Steve McDonald. Have fun trying to identify the places depicted in the illustrations below! Do you think this coloring book would make for an interesting architects’ gift?

Initially when you look at these pictures you might think that it could be paper, but in fact it’s actually wood. How cool is that ? These amazing pieces were created byElisa Strozyk, a young designer from Germany, that is able to turn blocks of wood into delicate paper-like material.
So far she has created wooden rugs, bed covers, table cloths and is working on a line of wooden clothes. Elisa Strozyk has been researching ways to provide wood with textile properties in testing methods to make wood flexible and soft, or interweave textile elements. One of the processes to design a flexible wooden surface is its deconstruction into pieces, which are then attached to a textile base. The wood is cut by hand or laser cut, and all tiles are stuck by hand to compose a textile-like surface.
She spent months working on her original idea, experimenting with different types of wood, until she settled on wood veneer. The slices of wood she uses are about 0.6 mm thick and very flexible, an essential property for her wooden textiles. But not all types of wood can be used to make wood fabric; oak, for example, is too brittle, so she prefers to use cherry and maple. We think that Elisa creations are really innovation and in the future we’d like to see some curtains made by using this new and innovative technology.
Finally here is a video where you can see Elisa Strozyk talking about her work…
